Hudsriding

Hudsriding is outside the village of Catton in Northumberland. Here's a map showing Hudsriding
Hudsriding  has been here quite some time! The present building is something over 200 years old but the site may have been occupied before that.
The name is shown as Huds Riding on the Ordnance Survey maps and in Royal Mail references. We have seen it spelt Hoodsriding in an old document - this probably give you an idea how you should pronounce it!
Riding in Northumberland is simply a clearing so it was probably cleared by Hud (or Mr. Hud?).
The building has changed somewhat over the years:

Hudsriding was owned by the Blair family from the time they purchased it from Lord Allendale soon after the 1st World War. The Sandisons lived here from the mid 1970s until it was sold to the Mahons in 1993.
Thanks to Derek Blair for the old pictures.
